Reed, Rod and Sarah - Kenya

Rod and Sarah Reed are global missionaries for the Church of the Nazarene in Kenya. They were appointed in August 2000.

Rod and Sarah both attended Olivet Nazarene University where Sarah graduated with a B.A. in Music Education in 1984.  Rod received a B.A. in Religion in 1984 and an M.A. in Religion in 1986. He then attended Nazarene Theological Seminary and graduated in 1988 with a M. Div. in Religion. Rod received a M. Phil. in Theological Ethics in 1991 and a Ph.D. in Theological Ethics in 1995, both from Drew University.

Rod serves as the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs (Academic Dean) of Africa Nazarene University (ANU) in Nairobi Kenya.  Upon arriving in Kenya in January 2001, he was teaching in the Department of Religion at ANU, training leaders for the Church in Africa.  Soon thereafter he was appointed as the Chair of the Department of Religion.  Now, as the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Rod is responsible for the academic affairs for the whole university.  Rod has published a book, several articles, presented papers at conferences, and most of all loves his God and his family.  Rod’s vision is to help make ANU the university of choice for those desiring Christ-centered higher education.  Currently the university is offering over 40 programs in three locations and has a student population of 3700.

Sarah’s role as the Children’s Ministries Coordinator for the Africa East Field (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and the Horn of Africa) has blossomed over the years and with her ministry team she travels across East Africa helping church leaders develop effective children’s ministries.  Sarah is also serving as a Children’s Sunday School Literature Editor for the Africa Region.  Sarah has developed a Children’s Membership Curriculum entitled, My Church!, for the Africa Region.

Sarah and Rod have three daughters: Rebecca is a graduate of Olivet Nazarene University with a Communications Degree and is serving with Strategic Applications International in Kenya.  Katie also graduated from Olivet Nazarene University with a degree in Social Work and is working as a program manager for a youth alcohol and substance abuse prevention program for two counties in Illinois.  Hannah has just graduated from West Nairobi High School in Kenya and will begin as a freshman at Olivet Nazarene University in the Fall of 2017.

Rod and Sarah share their testimony as follows, “God is doing some amazing things in Africa today and we are so blessed to be part of it.  We are honored to work with and teach some of the most wonderful people on this earth.  Yet, there are major challenges here that cry out for solutions that only God can provide.  We are honored to be given a chance to be part of God’s solution.  We cannot think of any other way we would rather invest our lives than in what we are doing.”
