David and Sylvia Potter are pioneer missionaries for the Church of the Nazarene in the south Pacific island nation of Vanuatu. They were first appointed as medical missionaries to the Nazarene College of Nursing at Kudjip, Papua New Guinea, in 1992 and served there until they accepted the call to begin the work of the Church of the Nazarene in Vanuatu in September 2003.
In June 2006, Revs. Peter and Jenny Isaac from Papua New Guinea and their three sons joined the Vanuatu mission team. Peter began taking responsibility as district superintendent for the growing work while David began the Vanuatu campus of South Pacific Nazarene Theological College, a five campus institution also located in Samoa, Fiji, Solomon Islands, and Guam. David and Sylvia are involved in training and equipping pastors and leaders for the church in Vanuatu. They are also pastoring, and managing mission finance.
David received a B.S. in nursing from Point Loma Nazarene College in San Diego, California, in 1979. He worked in community health in San Diego and at a minor emergency care center in Olathe, Kansas. He received an M.A. in Missiology from Nazarene Theological Seminary in 1990. He was ordained as an elder by Dr. William Prince in 1997. Prior to their departure for Vanuatu, David served as district superintendent for the Middle Ramu District in PNG. Sylvia received a B.S. in Nursing from Point Loma Nazarene College in 1980. She worked as a R.N. in pediatrics in San Diego and as an office nurse for a Christian family practice physician in Olathe, Kansas. She received her Masters of Arts in Spiritual Formation from Northwest Nazarene University in 2010. She was ordained as an elder by Dr. Eugenio Duarte on the North Central Ohio District in July 2013.
The Potters have three adult sons: Joel, Jeffrey, Wesley. Joel married Rebekah Radcliffe in 2006 and now have three daughters, Dora and Sylvia (5 years old) and Rosa (born 2015). Jeffrey and Kristen Merki married in 2013 and now are the parents of a baby boy, Samuel David. Wesley lives and works in southwest Michigan area.
