Biography for Dr. Woodie J. Stevens
In November 2006, Dr. Woodie J. Stevens assumed responsibilities as the denominations global director for Sunday School and Discipleship Ministries International. Prior to his election, he served as New Mexico district superintendent for over 12 years. Dr. Stevens served as senior pastor of Colorado Springs First Church and in Mundelein, Illinois and Vermillion, South Dakota.
MidAmerica Nazarene University (MNU) awarded, Dr. Stevens, a Bachelor of Arts degree (magna cum laude). He graduated with honors from Nazarene Theological Seminary, earning his Master of Divinity degree. Dr. Stevens earned the Doctor of Ministry degree from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and is a graduate of the School of Large Church Management, an extensive three-year management training program. In 1998, MidAmerica Nazarene University recognized Dr. Stevens as Alumnus of the Year and in 2009 honored him with an outstanding alumnus award from the School of Religion and Philosophy.
Dr. Stevens served the denomination as general NYI president. He has been a contributing editor to Bread magazine and authored an evangelistic appeal entitled How to Fill the Emptiness. His most recent published works include Pursuing the Mission, Beyond Sunday, and Every Paul Needs A Timothy. For two months in 2005, Dr. Stevens was immersed in Spanish language study in Antigua, Guatemala. He has traveled extensively, speaking in 42 different countries at camp meetings, conventions, seminars and revivals.
Dr. Stevens was born in North Platte, Nebraska, and lived there until leaving for Olathe, Kansas, to attend MNU. While at MNU he met his wife, Cheryl (Hancock). Dr. and Mrs. Stevens have two married children, a son and a daughter, and six grandchildren.
