Children's Sermon Ideas

The Talent Pool

Place several items in a bag or box. These items could include a music instrument, an artist’s brush, a hammer or other tool, a Bible, a Sunday School teacher’s book, etc. Gather the children and show each item. Ask the children who might use these items in the church. For instance, someone might use the hammer to repair things at the church. A teacher would use the Sunday School book to teach Sunday School.

Talk about how many people are needed to help with the work of the church. Say, God gives each of us talents to use in the work of the church – even children! Ask for volunteers to name their talent. Reaffirm how the children can use these talents.

Read 1 Corinthians 12:27-31.

Eli’s Very Bad Day

Gather the children. Ask, Have you ever had a bad day? What made it a bad day? Let the children respond. Provide an example of a bad day you have had recently.

Say, Our story today is about a man named Elijah who was having a very bad day. Let’s find out what happened. Read the story from 1 Kings 17:1-7.  Ask the children to tell why Elijah was having a bad day. Read the rest of the story (1 Kings 17:8-24). Talk about how Elijah handled the bad day. Talk about the importance of trusting God when we are facing problems.

Pray and ask God to help the children this week when they face difficult situations.

One Last Meal

Ask, If you only had money to buy one last meal, what would you eat? Would you share your money with someone else if it meant that you would have less?

Read 1 Kings 17:7-24. Talk about the widow and her willingness to listen to God. Explain that when we allow God to use us for His service He is able to help many people and accomplish a lot.
