The Bible Quiz Ministry (BQM) of NYI continues to expand the options of ministry among the youth of our world. This ministry is contributing to the discipleship, leadership, and character development of our youth everywhere it is being used.
Training and Support2008 has seen continued exposure and development in the usefulness of this unique ministry.
• In Argentina early this year, a group of district NYI leaders from around the South America (SAM) region had an opportunity to learn of the renewing work it takes to bring BQM back to their region. During the following week, BQM workshops were presented at the National Youth Conference in Peru. As a result of this training, a few months later, a young man reported that quizzing was being used as part of a youth camp/revival in the jungles of Peru with life changing results.
• Mid-year, workshops and sample Portuguese materials were used as part of the Brazil National Youth Conference. This area has now appointed its first national NYI BQM Coordinator, Edson Moura, to lead the ministry in Brazil.
• In July, the USA/Canada held their bi-annual National BQM tournament in combination with a FUEL event (a holiness conference for youth sponsored by the USA/Canada Region NYI). Over 800 participants gathered for this celebration.
• Also in July, BQM workshops were included at EJUMAC 2008 as youth from the Mexico and Central America (MAC) region gathered in Costa Rica for their youth conference and regional Esgrima Biblico (Bible Quiz) tournament.
• In October, the Caribbean Region held a mini regional BQM tournament for the English field. 17 teams came together to fellowship and compete.
Procedures and OrganizationProgress has also been made to help with communication, materials, and equipment purchases.
• The web page NYIQuiz.org has been connected with a photo album of quiz events around the Bible Quizzing world. A Facebook group has been set up and linked to the web page also.
• Materials are now being translated into Spanish, Portuguese, and French with the help of wonderful workers who are donating a large portion of their highly skilled time and talents. This effort is also substantially underwritten by the BQM Mission Offering Projects (two Jesus for a New Generation projects are dedicated towards funding Global Bible Quizzing projects) that are taken at several major tournaments across the USA/Canada and MAC regions.
• Procedures are now in place to assist our BQM leaders, outside the USA/Canada region, to order and get delivery of the new computer-based Quiz equipment. This is coordinated through the Global NYI office.
• A model job description has been developed for the regional, field and district level BQM leaders. This will soon be available for distribution to Global NYI Council as we encourage the assignment of Bible Quiz Ministry Coordinators to facilitate the ministry's development and support at all levels.
Plans and FutureThe challenges for this ministry remain the same;
• increased awareness and acceptance among global NYI youth leaders
• training for field/district leaders
• seeking solutions for the obstacles that limit the use of this ministry in every culture and language
As we move forward, there is increasing evidence of NPH financial support both from English material sales and joint contributions toward the cost of the translation of youth materials. NPH has also expressed interest in expanding the product line to better equip BQM participants.
In the coming year, the opportunity for ongoing training and workshops will decrease as preparations are being concentrated on the 2009 Global NYI Convention and General Assembly. A major opportunity still exists, however, as we work with each of the satellite Global NYI Convention sites to include BQM tournaments or demonstrations.
We have a rich history of being included in this convention since 1964. Participation in the Convention next year is far more important than just continuing a tradition. The true value is in the opportunity to encourage new leaders in all world areas in the purpose of this ministry -- training today's and tomorrow's leaders.
