The Timothy Award

What is the Timothy Award?

The Timothy Award was established by the Nazarene Youth International General Council in 1995 to recognize outstanding leadership and service to Youth through NYI at the Local, District, Regional, or General level. The Timothy Award embodies the words of the Apostle Paul, who in Philippians 2:20 recognized Timothy’s commitment to the needs of others: “I have no one else like him, who takes a genuine interest in your welfare” NIV. It was Timothy who had been encouraged to “not let anyone look down upon you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity” (1 Timothy 4:12, the theme verse of NYI). He then proved himself as a trusted Leader devoted to serving the body of Christ. His legacy was his genuine interest in the welfare of others, a description given by the one who knew him best.

Why give the Timothy Award? Leadership development is a significant aspect of the mission of Nazarene Youth International. The Timothy Award gives the Church of the Nazarene an opportunity to recognize, in a tangible way, outstanding service, sacrifice, and personal commitment to Youth. Net proceeds from the award become a vehicle for the development of global Youth Ministry through the NYI Fund. This fund has been established to provide a financial resource base from which global Youth leadership training, Youth evangelism, and resource development can be built. Funds received for the payment of the Timothy Award over and above the cost of the award, shipping, and engraving, will be applied to the NYI Endowment Fund for Global NYI Ministry.

Who can receive the Timothy Award? Local Churches, District or Regional NYI Councils, or Church Leaders may nominate outstanding men or women with a minimum of ten years of service to Youth. District or Regional Leadership may also nominate groups who have demonstrated outstanding service to NYI.

When should the Timothy Award be presented? Various Local, District and Regional events can provide excellent settings for the presentation of this award to worthy individuals or groups. Local Churches may choose to present the Timothy Award in conjunction with the Youth Week observance or on any other significant date in their Church calendar, such as Promotion Sunday or a special Youth revival/service. District NYI Conventions, District Assemblies, or Regional NYI Events are also appropriate venues for presentation. Whatever setting is chosen, strive to make the presentation a truly memorable occasion for the recipient. Some suggestions: _ Involve past and /or current members of the Sunday School Class or Youth Group. _ Invite former and present co-workers to be a part of the ceremony. _ Recognize family members who have helped to make the ministry possible. _ Provide written or recorded “testimonies” from significant individuals in the recipient’s ministry experience.

How do I order the Timothy Award? When you are ready to order:

_ Complete the application included below and return to Nazarene Youth International.

_ Your $200USD or purchase parity of $125.00USD outside of USA/Canada must accompany this application in order to begin the ordering process (make checks payable to “General Treasurer’s Office, Church of the Nazarene”). In order to allow sufficient time for processing and production, orders should be submitted at least sixty (60) days prior to the date you plan to present the award or pay a $100 USD rush fee. Additional shipping fees above and beyond the original are paid by the person ordering the award.

_ In addition to the application, submit a one-page summary on your letterhead (church, district, or region) of why you are choosing to honor this individual with the NYI Timothy Award. Include in this summary: the number of years this individual has been in service to Youth, various positions of service/ministry (Local, District, Regional, General level) held during that time, past and current involvement in other Church or community activities, as well as any other information you wish to share. When possible, please also include a current photograph of the honoree (or send a photograph from the actual award presentation at a later date). This application is subject to the approval of the Global NYI Office.

Please note:

Honorees will receive the sculpture along with a certificate of authenticity. Space is available on the sculpture to mount an engraved plate (3 ½” W x 5/8” H) highlighting the significance of the presentation at an additional cost. You will have the option of selecting this on the application.
