Disciples in Training

Who is Discipling You and Who Are You Discipling?

The mission of the Church of the Nazarene is, “To Make Christlike Disciples in the Nations.” Children can be disciples and can teach others to be disciples too. There are three streams of discipleship thought.

• Classic: This is discipleship through curriculum such as Sunday School, Children’s Worship, and mid-week classes. This form of discipleship is important in the overall Christian education and discipleship of children.
• Christian Spiritual Formation: this form of discipleship focuses on education through spiritual disciplines as children grow in their relationship with Christ. We are available to assist you as you disciple children through spiritual disciplines such as baptism, communion, membership, and more.
• Community: Discipleship does not happen in isolation. The body of Christ and the workings and actions therein serve to disciple children.

We want to help teachers and parents as you disciple your children and teach them to disciple their peers. Please contact us at childmin@nazarene.org for more information regarding discipleship.

Discovering My Faith The catechism teaches older elementary children the doctrinal concepts found in the Articles of Faith of the Church of the Nazarene. The primary goal of the catechism is to create in children a love for the beliefs of the Church of the Nazarene, so their lives will be shaped by these beliefs. The course also seeks to: • Help preteens recognize the importance of thinking about theological issues and provide a framework for doing so.
• Create a climate where preteens can openly discuss theological issues.
• Teach preteens how to deal with questions or doubts about beliefs without fear or guilt and without throwing out their faith because of their uncertainties.
• Provide sixth graders a unique "rite of passage" as they move from the children's department to the youth department.
• Encourage preteens to join the Church of the Nazarene as an expression of their commitment to Christ and to our interpretation of the teachings of Scripture.
