Childhood is when the foundation for a lifetime of discipleship is laid. Therefore, children must be a high priority in our churches. Children’s Week is a great time to begin a new emphasis and a new passion for evangelizing and discipling children and their families.
Kidz First—Where Discipleship Begins! is the 2009 Children’s Week theme. The primary goal is to
MAKE EVERY CHILD A DISCIPLE. This includes every child in your church, children in your community, and children around the world. We can’t afford to miss any child. Each one needs the opportunity to become a disciple of Christ. During Children’s Week, provide activities and events to help every child in your church and community have the opportunity to hear the gospel and respond to the call of Jesus. Also, plan a way for the children in your church to help children in other countries or cultures to hear the gospel and respond to God’s love.
Our scripture basis is Mark 2:14, NLT: “‘Come, be my disciple,’ Jesus said . . . .” Although Jesus was talking to Levi in this verse, He is also saying this to people today.
“Come, be my disciple” is the invitation Jesus gives to all people, especially to children. As adults, we have the awesome privilege to tell children how to accept Jesus as Savior and Lord and to help them grow in their faith as disciples of Jesus.
Children’s Week begins on Sunday, June 7, and concludes with Children’s Day on Sunday, June 14. Although we want to value and appreciate children all year, this is a focused week to show children they are valued and appreciated. Plan activities and special events to bring new children into the church and to encourage and disciple all children who come to the church.
Children’s Week Goals: 1. To help the Church recognize the need to invest time, energy, and resources into children.
2. To remind the Church to share the gospel with boys and girls and disciple them.
3. To provide ways for children to participate in church services, activities, and mission and service projects as they disciple others.
4. To honor and show appreciation for those who disciple children.
Children’s Week is a time to show children they are valued and appreciated. Plan activities and special events to bring new children into the church and to encourage and disciple all children who come to the church.
During Children’s Week, provide activities and programs to build or strengthen relationships between adults and children. Help children know they are valued by the congregation.
If you have a child care, preschool, elementary school, or after-school program, invite all children and parents to participate in Children’s Week events. Plan a way to showcase these children. Include a time of appreciation for parents who bring their children to your church for weekday care and education.
