Connecting the Family of God with the Word 2008: Sunday School Emphasis

During this emphasis, the Word of God will be highlighted as the heritage, the story, the worldview, the moral compass, and the foundation of the people (family) of God. Each week, a verse of Scripture provides the theme for the week. Use these verses as the scriptural basis for sermons to be delivered by the pastor or short devotions given by the Sunday School Superintendent in the service, in a combined Sunday School activity, or in a newsletter.

Age Groups
This Sunday School emphasis connects the various age groups within the congregation. Sunday School is for everyone. Be sure to emphasize how each group impacts all the others. Each group ministers to each other.

Call to Action
During each week of the emphasis, various activities are suggested. Some are one-time events which take place on Sunday morning. Others provide opportunities for Sunday School classes to make an impact on the church and greater community. Although these events can be a one-time event, they have been planned to encourage long-term impact. Events have been chosen which can be completed (to varying degrees of participation) by Sunday School classes of all age groups.

Note about Dates:
The spring Sunday School emphasis is traditionally the six weeks prior to Easter Sunday, concluding on Palm Sunday. Due to Easter’s early date in 2008,the “spring” emphasis is entirely in the winter. Some churches may prefer to hold the “Connecting God’s Family with the Word” emphasis in the weeks following Easter (Mar. 30-May 4), when it can be a truly spring emphasis.

Preparation Materials During the weeks before the emphasis, spend time in prayer, ordering supplies, and planning events.
