Preparation & Introduction

•In the weeks leading up to the Sunday School emphasis, review the new discipleship resources at www.discipleship.nazarene.org. Invite church leaders including Sunday School teachers to participate in an all-day seminar to work through the video sessions and reflect on discipleship practices in your church and specifically in your Sunday School.

•Promote an all-church study of the book Beyond Sunday: Everyday Conversations in Disciple Making, compiled by Woodie J. Stevens. These sessions will provide additional reflection upon what it means to “Make the Connection with Mission.” Free downloadable leader’s guide, handouts, and PowerPoint (PPT) are available here.

•Make copies of Pursuing the Mission available to the congregation. You can order copies from NPH. “Talking points” and an audio version of the book will soon be available online for free.

•Review the Mission Statement of the Church of the Nazarene here.

•Purchase Statement of Mission bookmarks to distribute to the congregation and/or the Statement of Mission poster to display, available from NPH.

•Create a bulletin board with a collage of pictures of people in the church (of all ages). At the top, have “Our Mission: To make Christlike disciples in the nations.” (Or use the Statement of Mission poster from NPH.)  Then have the phrases “Who are you discipling?” and “Who is discipling you?” on the bulletin board to convey that each person on the board needs to be a disciple and each person needs to disciple others. You can also take these pictures and make them into a PPT to play during or before the worship service to introduce the emphasis.

•Set a goal for this Sunday School emphasis – not simply for high attendance but for an increase the level of discipleship. This is much harder to quantify and measure than attendance, and harder to follow-through on. Use the materials at www.discipleship.nazarene.org to gain a sense of the level of discipleship in your Sunday School and discipleship ministries.

•On this Sunday, introduce the theme of the emphasis to each SS class and encourage each person to think of what it means to make Christlike disciples in the nations.
