General Superintendent Nina G. Gunter received the Maggie Sloan Crawford Award from Olivet Nazarene University on October 5, 2006. Olivet President John C. Bowling presented the award during the university’s chapel service, noting her preaching ministry, leadership, and service.
Dr. Gunter is the first female general superintendent in the Church of the Nazarene. The Maggie Sloan Crawford Award is named for Olivet’s first graduate, who later went on to serve the church as a pastor and evangelist. Made possible by the generous gifts of the Crawford family, the award is presented in Sloan Crawford’s honor to focus attention, recognition, and honor to selected women whose lives and accomplishments mark them as outstanding role models for today's young women.
Dr. Gunter was elected to the office of general superintendent at the 26th General Assembly in Indianapolis in June 2005. At the time of her election, she was serving as general director of Nazarene Missions International. During her tenure, she initiated many missions programs, and the annual giving to missions increased from approximately $30 million to $62 million (U.S.). Also an author, her writings include
The Traveler's Psalm, Our Defining Moment, Christian Perfections, and
The Cross—Seize It! Share It!
"I feel both honored and humbled by your kindness," Dr. Gunter said to the university community. She challenged the audience to allow God to use them to make a difference for eternity, as Maggie Sloan Crawford had done.
Previous recipients of this award include Elizabeth Dole, Eva Burrows, Gloria Gaither, and Sandra Day O'Connor.
