Affirming the essential role of prayer for the church, the Board of General Superintendents is providing leadership to a new series of clergy prayer summits. The first was held at Olivet Nazarene University June 11-13 with over 100 people in attendance. The 48-hour gathering was a prototype for summits yet to come. There was no set agenda. The time was filled with prayer, communion, praise and worship, and life application from the Word of God. Time and freedom were surrendered to the Holy Spirit to guide.
“I will not soon forget the experience of spending those hours in prayer, meditation, and Bible study with pastors from across that region,” said General Superintendent J. K. Warrick. “As we lifted our hearts in faith to the Father, He graciously poured out His Spirit upon us. My faith was strengthened; my heart was quickened; my spirit was renewed. I was changed!”
Over the next two years seven additional summits are planned at or near each of the U.S. Nazarene college/university campuses. The prayer summit leadership team appointed by the Board of General Superintendents includes Daniel Ketchum, director of Nazarene Missions International; Dan Copp, director of Clergy Development; Larry Dennis, superintendent of the Central Florida District; Steve Weber, director of Stewardship Ministries; and Dan Boone, president of Trevecca Nazarene University. Tom White, founder and president of Frontline Ministries, is serving as summit facilitator.
Dr. Warrick commented: “Oswald Chambers says ‘Prayer does not equip us for greater works. Prayer is the greater work!’ The prayer summits were birthed in the heart of God. It is His desire to draw us near to him so that He can draw near to us. I pray that the summits will prove to be the genesis of a prayer movement that will find its way into every local church.”
