 Benson's Buddies

Suzanne Cook

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding."   Proverbs 3:5

Benson is a red, English-style, double-decker bus. Benson's Buddies are children four-to six-years old and not yet in first grade. The Benson's Buddies two-year curriculum introduces young children to many social settings that exist in their communities, cities, and the world.

A major objective of Benson Buddies is to foster Christian character and lifestyle.

This program also introduces preschoolers to the form and ceremonies of the Caravan program. Children learn an official pledge, motto, and song and receive awards based on their participation in the lessons.

Statement of Purpose

  • Benson's Buddies is a Biblically–based curriculum for children four–to six–years old, not yet in first grade that presents Christian moral standards to young children.
  • Benson's Buddies considers whole-child development-spiritual, mental, physical and social.
  • Benson's Buddies provides Bible and contemporary stories and experience-oriented activities that foster Christian character and lifestyle.

The Need

Today's young children live in a global society. Few people recognize absolute moral standards. God gives His people clear direction in His Word for relating to Him and others. Proverbs 3:5, the motto for Benson's Buddies, helps children learn and understand they can "Trust in the Lord."

Recognition and Uniforms

Although complex merit systems are not appropriate for young children, it is important to encourage them to participate. Children receive a certificate for each unit. This certificate has a colored unit sticker attached and signatures of the teacher and director. Also included in the program are short instructions for participation in ceremonies, year-end graduation certificates, and year-end award buttons. ( sold separately.) Recognize participation during a unit with the Benson stamp and a bus pass made from a pattern in the Leader's Guide.

If local programs want uniforms, there is a vest pattern in the Leader's Guide. A badge can be purchased and sewn to each vest. Have children wear the vests during ceremony participation or at each Benson's Buddies meeting. Locally–purchased painter's caps are an alternate uniform item.
