Northern California District announces new superintendent

by | 22 May 2017

General Superintendent Eugénio R. Duarte announced the election of Albert W. Hung as superintendent of the Northern California District.

Elected 12 May on the first ballot, Hung replaces Gary Moore, who has served as interim superintendent since February 2015 after the previous superintendent, John Calhoun, resigned to take a position at Point Loma Nazarene University.

Hung currently serves as lead pastor of Trinity Church of the Nazarene in Monterey Park, California, a multi-cultural, multi-site church with services in English, Spanish, and Mandarin. From 2004 to 2008, Hung was the international student chaplain at Azusa Pacific University. During those four years, he taught courses in intercultural communication and personal leadership development to international students preparing for undergraduate and post-graduate studies.

He currently resides in Montebello, California, with his wife, Christine.

"The Northern California District plays a critical and strategic role in the USA/Canada Region," Albert said. "Ninety-three percent of the district's population is unchurched. Sixty-five percent have no prior church affiliation whatsoever. In an increasingly secular culture that admires Jesus but wants little to do with the church, how do we fulfill our mission to make Christlike disciples in the nations? I believe God is about to launch a powerful movement of innovative and effective ministry to the unchurched in the NorCal District, and we look forward to sharing our discoveries with the wider Body of Christ. Over the past few weeks I have met many creative, passionate leaders who have accepted this challenge to re-imagine what it means to be the church in Northern California."

Hung earned a Master of Divinity at Azusa Pacific University and both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education from Queen's University in Ontario.

He will begin his new position 11 June.
