He pastored Portland Columbia Ridge Church of the Nazarene (1986-1991), Klamath Falls Church of the Nazarene (1995-2003), and Bend Church of the Nazarene (2003-2018) in addition to serving as an associate at Portland First Church of the Nazarene (1991-1995).

In 2018, he was appointed superintendent of the South Arkansas District. Askren and his wife, Judy, reside in Little Rock, Arkansas.
