Oakland Nazarene ministry giving people hope

Topeka, Kansas

(Topeka Capital-Journal, 24 June) With an attendance of only 50 to 70 people most Sundays, Oakland Church of the Nazarene is more than pulling its weight when it comes to taking care of those in need, as it serves hundreds of people by offering free food and clothing several times each month through its Hope House Ministries program.

The church has a free pancake breakfast before worship services every Sunday. On the second and fourth Sundays of each month, the church has a food distribution program. The church also operates a nearby clothing bank on Saturday, Wednesday, and every other Sunday.

“What we do for the least of these, we do for Jesus,” said Jeanette Cook, an associate pastor at the church who oversees Hope House Ministries. “That’s our motto.”

Local church holds backpack giveaway, free haircuts for families with children

Joplin, Missouri

(Fourstates Homepage, 13 July) Calvary Church of the Nazarene in Joplin, Missouri, held their fourth annual backpack giveaway.

Between 150 and 200 backpacks full of back-to-school supplies including folders, notebooks, and pencils were given away.

Also for the first year, free haircuts for the kids were available as well.

“I’m a dad myself, I have two kids that are school age, and I know that the back to school process can be a stressful one, can be an expensive one," said Wesley Anderson, Calgary Church senior pastor. "What we’re trying to do is just help out the families of our community by making it a little less expensive, and a little less stressful.”
