Last week, the assassination of Haiti President Jovenel Moïse sent the nation into a tumultuous time. Haiti Field Strategy Coordinator Pierre Antoine Jacques shared the following update.

The recent events make the people in this country sad. It is a very difficult time that we are living here, but by the grace of God, the church is still moving forward.

Most churches still had Sunday services this past weekend. Even though some events were canceled, we all are praying for the country and gathering to praise God, as the Bible says in Psalm 62:8, “Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.”

It is difficult to visit churches, but leaders communicate with pastors over the phone and we communicate with the district superintendents by Zoom on a regular basis. There are few churches located in some of the surroundings vulnerable neighborhoods of Port au Prince, and those have been the most affected by the insecurity.

Missionaries were able to get food supplies and water this past weekend. We are following the news to see what will happen in the country. Even though things were a little bit quiet this past weekend, we don’t know what the coming days will look like. It is very uncertain, but we know God is in control.

We know that the churches around the world are praying with us. Please keep us in your prayers, so that God can give us the strength and courage in the midst of troubles and insecurity. We — the Haitian people — know that only God can deliver us from this situation.

Additional countries around the world are also experiencing turmoil and uncertainty, including Cuba, South Africa, and Eswatini. The global Nazarene family is encouraged to join in prayer for those affected.

The Cameroon flag is a vertical tricolor of green, red and yellow, defaced with a five-pointed star in its center. The center stripe is thought to stand for unity: red is the colour of unity, and the star is referred to as "the star of unity." The yellow stands for the sun and also the savannas in the northern part of the country, while the green is for the forests in the southern part of Cameroon.
