Flood damages South Carolina churches

Flood damages South Carolina churches

by | 06 Oct 2015

Much of South Carolina remains under water after days of torrential rainfall killed at least 15 people in the state and caused more than $1 billion worth of damage

South Carolina District Superintendent Eddie Estep reported several Nazarenes and churches were affected. Most Nazarene pastors cancelled services October 4 due to the weather and impassable roads.

"[Sunday] I spoke directly with many of our pastors, all of whom were safe and sound," Estep said.

Several churches sustained flooding in the lower levels and had roof leaks. Some pastors' homes also sustained moderate damage, and at least two pastors were stranded in their homes as of Monday due to impassable roads. At least one church, Columbia Abundant Life Fellowship Church of the Nazarene, had several inches of water throughout the building. The homes of some Nazarene members were flooded, and many families remained without electricity as of Wednesday.

Some district-owned buildings at the D. Moody Gunter Camp & Retreat Center sustained moderate water damage. One private cottage sustained significant damage due to a fallen tree.

"As bad as the storm has been, we are grateful that it was not worse," Estep said. "We will pray for safety and provision as the cleanup begins."

Hundreds of Crisis Care Kits were delivered to Sumpter, where the First Church of the Nazarene hosted a day of prayer Wednesday.

Prayer is requested for those affected and those providing assistance. More information will be added as it is made available.

The Cameroon flag is a vertical tricolor of green, red and yellow, defaced with a five-pointed star in its center. The center stripe is thought to stand for unity: red is the colour of unity, and the star is referred to as "the star of unity." The yellow stands for the sun and also the savannas in the northern part of the country, while the green is for the forests in the southern part of Cameroon.
